The NOMMA Upper Midwest Chapter meeting was held On Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Division 5 Metalworks in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with an attendance of over 40 people. A business meeting was held and followed by an educational session on soldering, brazing and welding copper alloys.
The education session was sponsored by NEF and was recorded for inclusion in the NOMMA library of knowledge. Mac Metals was the primary materials supplier, giving us items to work with at no cost to the Chapter, and also made a contribution towards the cost of the video production. RB Wagner also contributed some material to the demonstration. With much information to cover and a very short time in which to do it, JR Lodico, an intern at the Metals Museum from 2003-2006, did a fantastic job of conveying both basic instruction and helpful tips in soldering, then brazing, and finally welding with a pulse TIG. JR worked on handrail profiles in architectural bronze, nickel silver, and Commercial Redd (which is a new proprietary alloy from Mac Metals). He also had some architectural bronze flat bar used in the demonstration. Material preparation, fluxes, solders, filler metals and machine settings were pointed out as well as personal safety concerns. The demo was detailed where necessary but kept a good flow. Be sure to check out the video once it’s released and you will see the passion Mr. Lodico has for his work. He surely could have presented information for days rather than the hours he was given.
At the conclusion of the education session Mark Sisson encouraged all fabricators to contact him at Mac Metals should they need a few samples to play with in their own shop. He will be happy to furnish them.
Division 5 Metalworks sponsored a lunch and had set up a group tour of the restoration facility at the Air Zoo. They also set up a dinner at the Union in downtown Kalamazoo which was well attended.
We all had a wonderful time, we thank Greg Terrill his wife and all of his staff for such a wonderful day.
